If the water level is climbing into the overflow tube instead, adjust or replace the fill valve. Ten minutes and a trip to the hardware store solve most runners; the ones that persist after a new flapper have a worn valve seat, and that’s our department.

Safe: plungers, hair-grabber strips, hand augers, and patience. Not safe: chemical drain openers, which stress older pipes, endanger whoever works on the drain next, and usually just melt a hole through the clog that reseals in weeks. Seal and rhythm. A flange plunger seated fully over the outlet, worked with slow, firm strokes, beats frantic splashing every time. No plunger? Dish soap, half a bucket of hot tap water, and twenty minutes of walking away usually does it. The one move that always makes it worse is flushing again on a full bowl. And a toilet that needs rescuing weekly is telling you about its drain line, not its mood.

Power off first, always. Press the red reset on the underside; if it hums instead of spinning, something’s jamming the plate, so crank it free with a 1/4-inch hex key in the base socket, then reset again. Fingers never go in the chamber. If the resets become a routine, the motor’s done, and swapping the unit costs less than the aggravation.

The math usually turns on age and the nature of the failure. A thermostat, element, or valve on a unit under 8 years old is worth fixing. Anything involving the tank itself leaking, or repeated failures past year 10, means the money’s better spent on replacement, and that’s the natural moment to weigh tank against tankless for how your household actually uses hot water.

That bang is water hammer: fast-closing valves (washing machines and dishwashers are the usual triggers) slam moving water to a stop, and the shockwave rattles the pipes. Sustained high street pressure makes it worse and is common in Spring’s newer sections. Fixes range from adding hammer arrestors at the offending appliances to installing a pressure-reducing valve if the whole house is running hot. Usually yes for the damage, with the standard caveat: policies cover the sudden water damage a burst pipe causes, but adjusters look hard at whether the home was reasonably protected, especially if it sat unheated.
