Houston doesn’t get the extreme freezes of northern states, so water lines here are buried shallower than in places like Dallas or Oklahoma City. That had been the pattern for decades — until February 2021, when a statewide freeze burst thousands of Houston main water lines and changed how we think about depth. Repipe Solutions Inc gets this question constantly, so here’s the full answer.
Standard Houston Main Water Line Depth
Main water lines from the city meter to the house are typically buried 12 to 24 inches deep in Houston. This is much shallower than the 36 to 48 inches common in northern states.
Why So Shallow
The frost line in Houston is essentially at the surface. Historically, our lowest sustained temperatures weren’t cold enough to freeze water in a pipe buried even a few inches underground. Builders saved money by not digging deeper than required.
The 2021 Freeze Problem
During Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, we had extended days of hard freezes with ground temperatures dropping well below the historical minimums. Water lines buried less than 18 inches deep in many Houston homes froze solid and burst. Insurance losses across Texas were estimated at over $195 billion in one week.
What Changed in Code
Houston’s residential plumbing code now recommends (but doesn’t always require) 18 to 24 inches minimum depth on new installations. In practice, most new construction and repipes go at least 18 inches.
How to Find Out How Deep Yours Is
Look at the point where your main water line enters your home, usually through an exterior wall or the slab. That’s the shallowest point. The rest of the run to the meter is generally about the same depth or slightly deeper.
Why Depth Matters for Leak Repair
Shallow lines are easier and cheaper to repair because there’s less digging. But they’re also more susceptible to surface damage from lawnmowers, edgers, landscaping projects, driveway repairs, and tree root pressure.
Why Depth Matters for Freeze Protection
If your main water line is buried less than 18 inches, you’re at elevated risk in any repeat freeze event. Insulation on the exposed portions where it enters the house helps, but isn’t a substitute for depth.
Deeper Isn’t Always Better
Lines buried too deep in Houston’s expansive clay soil experience more movement from soil swell and shrink. The sweet spot is 18 to 30 inches.
Replacing Your Main Water Line
If you’re replacing an old galvanized or polybutylene main water line, this is your chance to bury the new one at proper depth. Repipe Solutions Inc recommends 24 inches for all new main line installations in the Greater Houston Area. Call us today at 832-662-4288.
