Short Answer
Emergency plumber cost nationally runs about $100 to $500 per hour, with an average near $170, according to Angi. Holiday calls can reach $600 an hour. Thumbtack says most people pay $377 for an emergency visit. After-hours rates are usually 1.5 to 3 times a plumber’s normal rate, and trip fees are often extra.
When water is coming through a ceiling at 11 p.m., the first question is how to stop it. The second is usually how much this is going to cost. This guide covers what emergency plumber cost looks like nationally, why nights, weekends, and holidays cost more, which fees show up on the bill, and how to keep the total down. Repipe Solutions Inc is a licensed Houston plumbing company that answers emergency calls around the clock, so we also explain how we price that work.

How Much Does an Emergency Plumber Cost?
The big cost guides measure it in different ways. Some report an hourly rate, some report what a whole visit costs. Here is what each one says, in its own terms.
| Source | What It Reports |
|---|---|
| Angi | $100 to $500 for most emergencies, about $170 per hour on average, as low as $60 and as high as $600 per hour |
| Thumbtack | $215 to $655 per visit, $377 typical; hourly rates of $90 to $147, averaging $125 |
| Modernize | About $300 to $600 per hour on nights, weekends, and holidays |
| HomeAdvisor | Emergency calls outside regular hours add $100 to $300 or more to a normal plumbing bill |
The ranges are wide because the guides average very different jobs. None of these guides publishes a Houston figure. The only Texas city in Angi’s local table is Austin, at $265 to $1,350 for an emergency call, so treat any national number as a rough guide, not a quote.
Emergency Plumber Cost Per Hour: Evenings, Weekends, and Holidays
Timing is the biggest single factor in the bill. Angi puts normal plumber rates at $40 to $200 an hour and says emergency work runs 1.5 to 3 times that. Its breakdown by time of call:
| When You Call | Typical Hourly Range (Angi) |
|---|---|
| Evening | $60 to $300 |
| Weekend | $80 to $400 |
| Holiday | $120 to $600 |
HomeAdvisor describes a common pattern: time and a half for evenings, double time for weekends, and triple time for holidays. It also notes that some plumbers bill after-hours work as a higher hourly rate, some as a flat rate, and some as both. Modernize says evening and weekend calls may simply add a $100 to $200 surcharge.
Trip Fees, Service Call Fees, and Minimums
The hourly rate is only part of the bill. These charges often sit on top of it, and they are named differently from company to company:
- Service call fee. HomeAdvisor puts these at $100 to $250, and says they usually include the first hour of work.
- Trip or call-out fee. $50 to $300 depending on distance, per HomeAdvisor. Unlike a service call fee, this is charged in addition to labor.
- Emergency flat fee. Angi says many plumbers charge a flat emergency or trip fee of $150 to $300 on top of the higher hourly rate. HomeAdvisor says it can reach $300 to $400 or more in extreme cases.
- Minimum time. Some plumbers skip the trip charge and bill a one or two hour minimum instead. If the fix takes 15 minutes, you still pay for the minimum, according to HomeAdvisor.
Two plumbers can quote the same hourly rate and send very different invoices, so ask which fees apply.
Emergency Plumbing Cost by Type of Problem
What the plumber is fixing matters as much as when. These are national ranges from two of the guides. Angi’s figures are general repair costs, not emergency rates, so an after-hours call will usually land toward the top or above them.
| Problem | Angi (repair cost) | Modernize (emergency) |
|---|---|---|
| Burst pipe | $150 to $5,000 | $500 to $1,500 |
| Main sewer line clog or backup | $1,325 to $5,000 | $500 to $3,800 |
| Water heater | $225 to $975 | $500 to $1,200 |
| Toilet or drain clog | $150 to $375 (toilet repair) | $300 to $800 |
| Gas line repair | $120 to $1,350 | Not listed |
These numbers do not include water damage. Drywall, flooring, and cabinets are a separate bill, so stopping the water fast matters most. A gas smell is not a “call the plumber first” problem. Leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside. Our guide on what a gas leak smells like covers this in more detail.
Before paying for an after-hours visit, our guides on a leaking water heater and a clogged toilet cover what you can check yourself.
Why the 24 Hr Emergency Plumbing Cost Is Higher
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the median pay for plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters at $30.67 an hour as of May 2025. The BLS also notes that plumbers are often on call for emergencies and that many work nights and weekends.
The gap between that wage and a $170 billed rate is not all profit. HomeAdvisor explains that the hourly rate also covers insurance, overhead, equipment, the vehicle, and tools, plus driving time. After hours, there is also the cost of keeping someone on call.
Can It Wait Until Morning?
Sometimes the cheapest emergency plumber is the one you call at 8 a.m. If you can stop the water at a fixture valve or the main, and the house is safe, many problems can wait for regular hours. HomeAdvisor makes the same point about leaking pipes: minor leaks can be scheduled, while leaks causing significant damage or that you cannot control need a call right away.
Waiting has its own cost, though. The EPA says wet materials dried within 24 to 48 hours of a leak usually will not grow mold. In Houston’s humid air, a soaked wall or carpet that sits all weekend is a bigger risk than an after-hours fee.
A simple rule: if water is still moving and you cannot shut it off, if sewage is backing up, or if water is near electrical equipment, call now. If the water is off and nothing is getting worse, a daytime appointment is usually the better value.
How to Keep Emergency Plumbing Cost Down
- Shut off the water first. Every minute water runs adds to the damage bill, not the plumbing bill. Know where your main shutoff is before you need it.
- Ask for a temporary fix. Angi suggests asking the emergency plumber to do only what is needed to make things safe tonight, then getting the permanent repair priced during normal hours.
- Describe the problem clearly on the phone. Say what failed, where, and what you have already shut off. A plumber who knows what to bring wastes less time.
- Clear the work area and make sure there is good light, as Angi recommends.
- Check your home warranty if the failure is an appliance like a water heater. Angi notes some home warranties cover them.
Questions to Ask Before the Plumber Comes Out
- Do you charge a trip fee, a service call fee, or an after-hours fee, and how much?
- Is the first hour included in that fee, or billed on top of it?
- Is there a minimum charge?
- Will I get a price for the repair before any work starts?
- Are you licensed in Texas? You can check any plumber’s license with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, which has a public license search.
- Is tonight’s fix temporary or permanent, and what will the permanent fix cost?
Price Gouging and Insurance in Texas
Charging more at midnight is normal. Price gouging is something else, and in Texas it has a specific legal meaning. The Texas Attorney General says charging excessive prices for necessities after the governor declares an emergency is illegal under the Deceptive Trade Practices Act. After storms, the office also warns about door-to-door contractors. If you think you were overcharged after a declared disaster, raise it with the company first, then file a complaint with the Attorney General.
On insurance, the Texas Department of Insurance says most home policies cover sudden and accidental release of water, but not a continuous leak. Policies also generally do not cover mold removal unless it is repairing damage from a covered risk. Your deductible applies, so a small claim may not be worth filing.
What Repipe Solutions Charges for Emergency Plumbing in Houston
We do not publish flat emergency rates, because the price depends on what failed and what it takes to fix it. What we do is price the job before the work begins. You will see what is wrong, what the fix is, and what it costs, with no hidden fees added later. Our emergency plumbing service is available around the clock, holidays included, across Houston and nearby communities. The service page also lists free estimates, same day service, and 24 months of 0% financing.
If the emergency involves water damage, we can also document it with photos and notes and write repair estimates your adjuster can follow.
When to Call a Plumber Right Away
- Water is still running and you cannot shut it off
- A pipe has burst, or a ceiling is sagging or dripping
- Sewage is coming up into a tub, shower, or floor drain
- A water heater is leaking from the tank itself
- Water is reaching outlets, appliances, or the electrical panel (stay out of the water and shut off power only if you can do it without standing in it)
- You smell gas: leave first, then call the gas company or 911 from outside before calling a plumber
If none of these apply and the water is off, you can usually wait for regular hours and save the after-hours premium.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a trip fee and a service call fee?
A service call fee usually includes the first hour of labor. A trip fee covers the drive and is charged on top of labor. HomeAdvisor puts service call fees at $100 to $250 and trip fees at $50 to $300.
Why do emergency plumber hourly rates vary so much between sources?
Each guide averages different jobs, times, and markets. Angi reports about $170 an hour on average, Thumbtack about $125, and Modernize $300 to $600 for nights, weekends, and holidays. Ask the company you call for its own numbers.
Will I pay a full hour if the repair takes 15 minutes?
Often, yes. Many plumbers bill a minimum of one or two hours, or charge a service call fee that covers the first hour no matter how short the job is.
Can I get a temporary fix tonight and the full repair later?
Yes, and it can save money. Ask the plumber to make the problem safe tonight, such as capping a line, then schedule the permanent repair during regular hours at regular rates.
Is double the normal rate at midnight considered price gouging?
Not by itself. After-hours premiums are standard. In Texas, price gouging refers to excessive prices for necessities after the governor declares an emergency, and those complaints go to the Attorney General.
How much of an emergency plumber’s hourly rate goes to the plumber?
The BLS median wage for plumbers is $30.67 an hour. The rest of the billed rate covers overtime, insurance, the truck, tools, and the cost of having someone on call.
